Water damage acrossLake Stevens neighborhoods

Lake Stevens grew from a mill town at North Cove into a city of more than 35,000 by annexing the land around its lake. That history means very different houses and very different water problems a few miles apart.

Why one city gets four pages

The shoreline deals with lake level and an outlet that overflows. Hartford sits beside that outlet and along Catherine Creek. Frontier Village is a highway crossroads where retail, apartments and housing sit close together. Cavalero Hill is upland, where trouble comes from slopes, roof runoff and newer plumbing rather than the lake.

The city's boundaries changed a great deal in a short time. The first major annexations in 2006 added 1,563 acres near Frontier Village and at the lake's north end, and the 2009 annexation brought in more than 10,000 people from the southwest. [1] The Southeast Interlocal Annexation followed in 2021, and the city says that brought its boundaries around all sides of the lake.
